Dra. Selene Fernandez

Dr. Selene Fernandez-Valverde is a research professor at the Advanced Genomics Unit, Langebio of Cinvestav in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico. Her laboratory studies the evolution of long non-coding RNAs in various animals and plants to better predict their functions using bioinformatics tools. She obtained a degree in Genomic Sciences from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and completed her doctoral and postdoctoral training at the University of Queensland, Australia.

She received the L'Oreal-UNESCO-AMC-CONACYT National Fellowship for Women in Science in 2016 and the L'Oreal-UNESCO International Rising Talents Fellowship in 2018. She is also a founding member of Mas Ciencia por México (More Science for Mexico), the Mexican Bioinformatics Network (Red Mexicana de Bioinformática), and a volunteer instructor for Software Carpentry. In addition, she has served as a volunteer mentor for foundations such as Ekpapalek and the "Women in STEM: Future Leaders" program of the Mexico-United States Foundation.
